What is Addition Process?

Addition process is the way how to add two addends. Suppose, 5 + 3 = 8. Here, how do we get 8? The adding way of 5 + 3 is the addition process.

There are many types of addition processes. Some are as follows.

Addition process: Add 1-digit number?

a. Draw sings as per each addend and counts all the signs to get the sum.

5 + 3 = ?

Draw 5 signs for the first addend 5.

Draw 3 signs for the second addend 3.

Now, count all the signs. And you will get 8.

So, 5 + 3 = 8.

1. Add the following numbers.

(i) 5 + 4 = ?

(ii) 6 + 3 = ?

(iii) 2 + 4 = ?

Solution:

(i) Draw signs as per the addend:

5 à ||||| |||| ß 4.

Count all the signs and get 9.

So, 5 + 4 = 9.

(ii) Draw signs as per the addend:

6 à ||||||  ||| ß 3.

Count all the signs and get 9.

So, 6 + 3 = 9.

(iii) Draw signs as per the addend:

2 à ||   |||| ß 4.

Count all the signs and get 6.

So, 2 + 4 = 6.

b. Count by fingers model:

(i) 5 + 1 =?

(ii) 5 + 2 =?

Solution:

(i)  Suppose, 5 = 🖐 [left hand 5 fingers], 1 = 🖕 [right hand 1 finger]

So, Now count all the fingers, 🖐 🖕 = 6 fingers.

So, 5 + 1 = 6.

(ii)  Suppose, 5 = 🖐 [left hand 5 fingers], 2 = 🤞 [right hand 2 finger]

So, Now count all the fingers, 🖐 🤞 = 7 fingers.

So, 5 + 2 = 7.

c. Start count from the first addend and go forward as the same steps as next addend.

Example:

6 + 3 = ?

Start counting from 6. and go forward for the next 3 steps. So, the sum is 9.

Start from
Next 3 steps
6
7
8
9

So, 6 + 3 = 9.

(i) 5 + 2 = ?

(ii) 7 + 4 = ?

Solution:

Start from
Next 2 steps
5
6
7

so, 5 + 2 = 7.

Start from
Next 4 steps
7
8
9
10
11

So, 7 + 4 = 11.

Addition process: Make ten process.

1. 7 + 4 = ?

2. 6 + 7 = ?

3. 9 + 5 = ?

Note:

First imagine how many numbers needed to make ten with the first addend and as per process of make ten, apart the second addend.  Make ten process is applicable for those addition sentences whose sum is 10 to 18.

Solution:

1.

7 + 4

= 7 + 3 + 1 [4 is divided into 3 and 1]

= 10 + 1

= 11

So, 7 + 4 = 11.

2.

6 + 7

= 6 + 4 + 3

= 10 + 3

= 13

3.

9 + 5

= 9 + 1  + 4

= 10 + 4

= 14.
