Comparing Numbers

Comparing numbers between two numbers, we used 3 signs. They are-

a. Equal Sign (=)

b. Greater than sign (>)

c. Less than sign (<)

Equal/= is used to represent two equal quantities or numbers. such as:

4 = 4

or,

4 = 10 – 6

if a number is greater than another number, then we use greater than (>) sign. such as:

6 > 5 [6 is greater than 5]

if a number is less than another number, then we use less than (<) sign. such as:

3 < 4 [3 is less than 4]

Rules of comparing Numbers:

There are two rules to compare numbers. They are:

a. Numbers with more digits:

Example:

11 > 9 [9>1 but 11>9 because 11 has more digits than 9]

22 > 7 [22 has more digits than 7]

333 > 99 [333 has more digits than 7]

b. Numbers starting with a larger digit:

if both numbers contain the same digits then the number will be greater which number leftmost places digit is greater.

Example:

99 > 89 [The first digit of 99 is greater than the first digit of 89]

323 > 313 [The second digit of 323 is greater than the second digit of 323]
