Solution:

597 – 374

= (500 + 90 + 7) – (300 + 70 + 4)

= (500 - 300) + (90 - 70) + (7 - 4)

= 200 + 20 + 3

= 223

= (800 - 100) + (50 - 30) + (17 - 9)

Or,

867 – 139

= (800 + 60 + 7) – (100 + 30 + 9)

= (800 - 100) + (60 - 30) + (7 - 9)

= 700 + 30 - 2

= 728

Solution:

755 – 564

= (700 + 50 + 5) – (500 + 60 + 4)

= (600 + 150 + 5) – (500 + 60 + 4) [∵ 50 < 60]

= (600 - 500) + (150 - 60) + (5 - 4)

= 100 + 90 + 1

= 191

Or,

755 – 564

= (700 + 50 + 5) – (500 + 60 + 4)

= (700 - 500) + (50 - 60) + (5 - 4)

= 200 - 10 + 1

= 191


12. Subtract 345 from 524

Solution:

524 – 345

= (500 + 20 + 4) – (300 + 40 + 5)

= (500 + 10 + 14) – (300 + 40 + 5) [∵ 4 < 5]

= (400 + 110 + 14) – (300 + 40 + 5) [∵ 10 < 40]

= (400 - 300) + (110 - 40) + (14 - 5)

= 100 + 70 + 9

= 179

524 – 345

= (500 + 20 + 4) – (300 + 40 + 5)

= (500 - 300) + (20 - 40) + (4 - 5)

= 200 - 20 - 1

= 179
