Addends position Changing, properties of addition and the sum, Addends change but the sum stays same,

Addends position Changing and the sum

Today we shall learn what happens in an addition sentence when we change the addends position. Will it change the sum? So, we have named our topic as addends position changing, and the sum. Let’s go and learn about the changing effect with rules and examples.

Addends position Changing and the Sum
Addends position Changing and the Sum

a. When an addition sentence has two addends and the changing position of the addends has no changing effect on the sum, the Sum Stays Same.

Example:

  1. 8 + 9 = 17 …..(i)
  2. 9 + 8 = 17 …..(ii)

Look at the above two addition sentences.

  1. 1st addend = 8, 2nd addend = 9  and the sum = 17.
  2. 1st addend = 9, 2nd addend = 8 and the sum = 17.

As there have a position changing of addends but in two addition sentences the sum are same.

We can say it as easily,

The sum of 8 and 9 is equal to the sum of 9 and 8.

More Exampple:

  1. 11 + 22 = 33
  2. 22 + 11 = 33

The sum of 11 and 22 = the sum of 22 and 11.

  1. 65 + 18 = 83
  2. 18 + 65 = 83

The sum of 65 and 18 = the sum of 18 and 65.

  1. 245 + 136 = 381
  2. 136 + 245 = 381

The sum of 245 and 136 = the sum of 136 and 245.

b. When an addition sentence has three or more addends and the changing position of the addends has no changing effect on the sum, the Sum Stays Same. If we regroup two or more addends, there has no changing effect on the sum, the Sum Stays Same also.

Example:

  1. 5 + 6 + 7 = 18
  2. 5 + 7 + 6 = 18
  3. 6 + 5 + 7 = 18
  4. 6 + 7 + 5 = 18
  5. 7 + 5 + 6 = 18
  6. 7 + 6 + 5 = 18

In Regroup:

  1. (5+6) + 7 = 18
  2. 5 + (6+7) = 18
  3. (5+7) + 6 = 18

More Exampple:

  1. 20 + 30 + 40 = 90
  2. 20 + 40 + 30 = 90
  3. 30 + 20 + 40 = 90
  4. 30 + 40 + 20 = 90
  5. 40 + 20 + 30 = 90
  6. 40 + 30 + 20 = 90

In Regroup:

  1. (20 + 30) + 40 = 90
  2. (20 + 40) + 30 = 90
  3. (40 + 30) + 20 = 90

#Find the sum of 100 + 200 + 300

Solution:

100 + 200 + 300

= (100 + 200) + 300

= 300 + 300

= 600

Or,

100 + (200 + 300)

= 100 + 500

= 600
