What is missing
number in Subtraction?
When the number called minuend or subtrahend is absent from the subtraction sentence, then it’s called the missing number in subtraction.
Way to find out
Missing number in Subtraction:
We can find out the
missing number in subtraction as per the process of addition or subtraction. If
the missing number is minuend, then we use addition process or if the missing
number is subtrahend, then we use subtraction process. Read it in details with
example as below:
When the missing
number is Minuend:
In this case, we
shall add subtrahend and difference. And the sum will be equal to the
minuend or missing number.

Here,
Missing Number = Minuend = ?
And Minuend =
Subtrahend + Difference = 3 + 6 = 9.
So, Missing number
= 9.
When the missing
number is Subtrahend:
In this case, we shall
subtract the difference from the minuend. And the subtract result will be equal to the subtrahend or missing number.
Example:
9 | - | ? | = | 6 |
Minuend | - | Subtrahend | = | Difference |
Here, Missing Number = Subtrahend = ?
And Subtrahend =
Minuend - Difference = 9 - 6 = 3.
So, Missing number
= 3.
1. Find the missing number in the following sentences.
(a) 9 - ? = 7.
Solution:
Here, 9 – 7 = 2. [Because,
Subtrahend = Minuend - Difference]
So, Missing number
= 2.
and 9 – 2 = 7.
(b) 15 - ? = 8.
Solution:
Here, 15 – 8 = 7. [Because,
Subtrahend = Minuend - Difference]
So, Missing number
= 7.
and 15 – 7 = 8.
(c) 100 - ? = 90.
Solution:
100 – 90 = 10. [Because,
Subtrahend = Minuend - Difference]
So, Missing number
= 10.
and 100 – 10 = 90.
(d) ? – 1 = 0.
Solution:
Here, 1 + 0 = 1.
[Because, Minuend = Subtrahend + Difference]
So, Missing number
= 1.
and 1 – 1 =0.
(e) ? – 50 = 10.
Solution:
Here, 50 + 10 = 60.
[Because, Minuend = Subtrahend + Difference]
So, Missing number
= 60.
and 60 – 50 = 10.
(f) ? – 13 = 3.
Solution:
Here, 13 + 3 = 19 [Because,
Minuend = Subtrahend + Difference]
So, Missing number
= 19.
and 19 – 13 = 3.
