2-Digit Numbers Subtraction using Expanded Form and Short Form

Here, we shall subtract 2-digit numbers from another 2-digit number using the expanded form and the short form. Let’s try to solve the following questions using either the expanded form or the short form.

A. 2-Digit Numbers Subtraction using Expanded Form

1. Subtract 48 from 73 using expanded form with regrouping.

Solution:

73 – 48

= (7 tens + 3 ones) – (4 tens + 8 ones) [Here, 3 ones < 8 ones]

= (6 tens + 13 ones) – (4 tens + 8 ones) [Regrouped 73]

= (6 tens – 4 tens) + (13 ones – 8 ones)

= 2 tens + 5 ones

= 25

2. Subtract 57 from 84 using expanded form with regrouping.

Solution:

84 – 57

= (8 tens + 4 ones) – (5 tens + 7 ones) [Here, 4 ones < 7 ones]

= (7 tens + 14 ones) – (5 tens + 7 ones) [Regrouped 84]

= (7 tens – 5 tens) + (14 ones – 7 ones)

= 2 tens + 7 ones

= 27

3. Subtract 29 from 62 using expanded form with regrouping.

Solution:

62 – 29

= (6 tens + 2 ones) – (2 tens + 9 ones) [Here, 2 ones < 9 ones]

= (5 tens + 12 ones) – (2 tens + 9 ones) [Regrouped 62]

= (5 tens – 2 tens) + (12 ones – 9 ones)

= 3 tens + 3 ones

= 33

4. Subtract 45 from 87 using expanded form.

Solution:

87 – 45

= (8 tens + 7 ones) – (4 tens + 5 ones)

= (8 tens – 4 tens) + (7 ones – 5 ones)

= 4 tens + 2 ones

= 42

5. Subtract 51 from 97 using expanded form.

Solution:

97 – 51

= (9 tens + 7 ones) – (5 tens + 1 ones)

= (9 tens – 5 tens) + (7 ones – 1 ones)

= 4 tens + 6 ones

= 46

6. Subtract 12 from 95 using expanded form.

Solution:

95 – 12

= (9 tens + 5 ones) – (1 tens + 2 ones)

= (9 tens – 1 tens) + (5 ones – 2 ones)

= 8 tens + 3 ones

= 83

B. 2-Digit Numbers Subtraction using Short Form

1. Subtract 68 from 95 using short form.

Solution:

T
O

9
5
-
6
8

Here, 5 < 8

So, borrow 1 ten from 9 tens leaving behind 8 tens.

T
O

8
15

9
5
-
6
8

Now, 15 – 8 = 7 and 8 – 6 = 2.

So, we get,

T
O

8
15

9
5
-
6
8

2
7

Therefore, 98 – 68 = 27.

2. Subtract 29 from 46 using short form.

Solution:

T
O

4
6
-
2
9

Here, 6 < 9

So, borrow 1 ten from 4 tens leaving behind 3 tens.

T
O

3
16

4
6
-
2
9

Now, 16 – 9 = 7 and 3 – 2 = 1.

So, we get,

T
O

3
16

4
6
-
2
9

1
7

Therefore, 46 – 29 = 17.

3. Subtract 25 from 58 using short form.

Solution:

T
O

5
8
-
2
5

Here, 8 < 5

Now, 8 – 5 = 3 and 5 – 2 = 3.

So, we get,

T
O

5
8
-
2
5

3
3

Therefore, 58 – 25 = 33.
